Torricella Sicura is located between the Tordino and Vezzola rivers at 430 m s.l.m., it is one of the 44 Municipalities of the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga Park and is characterized by the presence of many hamlets, districts and localities scattered over a vast territory. Being situated on a hill, it enjoys an excellent glance on the valley below and on the Gran Sasso mountain range and in general the area in which it is inserted has a great naturalistic and archaeological value. Very interesting and valuable is its historic center, known as Antico Borgo, which houses ancient houses in masonry and stone, some beautiful portals, narrow streets and alleys and picturesque panoramic corners.
The human presence in the current territory of Torricella Sicura dates back to the Italic period, while not a few archaeological finds, in particular of a temple and some tombs, testify to the Roman presence in almost the whole area. During the medieval period it was part of the Duchy of Spoleto, it returned to the possessions of various lords and was a feud of Uguccione. The Benedictine Women's Monastery of San Giovanni a Scorzone, built in the 11th century and located near the village of Ioanella, exercised a significant cultural, spiritual and economic influence on the area. Starting from the fourteenth century and until 1806, however, the territory was incorporated into the Bishopric of Teramo.
Torricella Sicura fits fully in the Teramo culinary tradition, in particular mountain and agro-pastoral. A typical dish of the village is "Lu rintrocelo". The "rintrocelo" is an instrument similar to the machine to make home-made pasta that is hand-operated and that passes the mass through a die making them take various forms. The ingredients for 6 people are as follows: 300 g of soft wheat flour and 300 g of durum wheat flour; 3 egg whites; 200 g of lamb meat; 200 g of beef and pork (lean); half a cup of olive oil and some salt.
First of all it is necessary to mince all the meat and fry it in oil. Then knead the flour with the three egg whites in order to obtain a rather hard paste. Introduce it in the "rintrocelo" to reduce it to the desired size, cook it in boiling salted water and then season with the sauce and meat. If you want you can sprinkle grated pecorino cheese.
Among the most representative dishes of the territory there is also the callara sheep and the torricellese minestrone.
Among the various things to see certainly do not miss Villa Capuani, a real flagship of Torricella Sicura. It was the stately home of the Capuani family and is located in the immediate outskirts of the village, along the road that leads to Ceppo. Mario Capuani, an anti-fascist doctor killed by the Germans on September 26, 1943, also lived here after the battle of Bosco Martese, who saw for the first time in Italy the partisans facing the Nazis in an open field.
Precisely on the date of the barbarous murder of Mario, the villa was left by all his family, parents and two sisters. The importance of this structure, as well as historical because linked to the martyrdom of Mario Capuani, is also artistic as it preserves many valuable decorations and precious frescoes. Remarkable is also the furniture, consisting of antique furniture of the early twentieth century.
An all Torricellese tradition is that of the Infiorata of Corpus Domini, in the month of June, set up along the streets of the town thanks to the art of local infioratory masters gathered in the Artistic Infiorate "TruciolInArte", who work on the composition of large artistic paintings inspired by sacred themes and made with colored spruce shavings.
