Territory Roseto degli Abruzzi is the second most populous city in the province of Teramo thanks to a constant demographic evolution that has occurred without interruption over the decades. It is located on the Adriatic coast even if its historic core, represented by the hamlet of Montepagano, is in the hills at almost 300 meters above sea level.
The inhabited center of the city develops almost entirely between the mouths of the Vomano and Tordino rivers and is affected by the presence of groundwater that can also rise by one meter depending on the season, especially in spring due to the melting of the snow on the mountains. Roseto borders to the north with Giulianova, to the south with Pineto and to the west with Notaresco and Morro d'Oro.
Roseto degli Abruzzi as such was born centuries after its original nucleus, that is Montepagano, current fraction of the city and medieval village, born in the eleventh century on the hill about 300 meters s.l.m. Initially called Castel Pagano was surrounded by high walls to defend the community from raids by the Saracens that centuries threatened the Adriatic coasts.
In 1806, as a result of the reforms of Giuseppe Bonaparte that led to the abolition of feudalism, the clergy of Montepagano rented at a low price 12 shares of its land in the valley area that extends between the Vomano and Borsacchio rivers.
This favored new settlements and therefore an expansion of the village on the coast, which in this area took the name "Le Quote" and that on May 22, 1887 with royal decree of Umberto I, King of Italy, changed its name to Rosburgo, German-speaking toponym that means "city of roses".
In 1927 the town hall was moved to Rosburgo, which at the same time changed its name to Roseto degli Abruzzi, also due to the protests of the local population and above all soldiers and World War I who could not stand a name that somehow called the enemy Germany.
Since the 1960s, Roseto began to grow rapidly, both from an economic and demographic point of view, becoming one of the main coastal cities of Abruzzo together with Giulianova, Pineto, Silvi, Montesilvano, Pescara, Francavilla al Mare, Vasto and San Salvo. This was possible thanks to the farsighted use of the coast and the sea, "reconverted" to tourist use rather than used only for fishing.
The kitchen of Roseto degli Abruzzi can only be deeply linked to the sea. So, in addition to offering a wide variety of traditional seafood dishes, can also boast some typical recipes, such as mullet rosetana. The recipe for five people is as follows: 25 mullets of the Adriatic coast caught locally, 200 g of low-fat cured ham, 20 laurel leaves, half a glass of dry white wine, half a glass of olive oil, water and salt.
The preparation must follow these steps: clean the mullets, squish and wash them. Put them to heart in an earthenware dish placing them on the bottom sandwiching them with the raw ham cut into strips and with the laurel leaves. Sprinkle with wine and sprinkle with oil, add salt and add a little water. Cook over low heat, until almost total reduction of the cooking liquid and finally serve hot.
Market: Tuesday and Thursday.
Twinning: Jawor (Polonia), La Louvière (Belgio), Makarska (Croazia), Roseto Capo Spulico (Italia), Romentino (Italia).
