Rocca Santa Maria is a municipality scattered inside Teramo composed of about twenty hamlets, districts and villages that dot the territory on which it extends and ranging from a minimum altitude of 600 m s.l.m. at a maximum of 1100 m.
The municipal seat is at Imposte, while two very well known localities are the Ceppo, a tourist mountain area (above all a time) and mushroom picking, and Bosco Martese, inseparably linked to the partisan resistance as a place where the first battle took place in the open field in Italy against the Nazi-fascists.
The territory extends from west to east, in an elongated form from Pizzo di Moscio (2411 m) to Monte della Farina (1750 m), in the Tordino river basin, while from north to south from the course of the river Castellano to Monte Ceppo ( 1500 m) up to the Tordino.
The toponym of the village is documented for the first time in 1273 and derives from the existence of the ancient medieval fortified structure of "Rocca Santa Maria" located on the Colle Castello. Instead the human presence is much older and has its roots in the Roman era, as evidenced by traces and findings found a bit 'over the current municipal territory.
During the seventeenth century it experienced the phenomenon of brigandage that in these parts was quite capillary given the geo-morphological characteristics of the territory characterized by hills and very high peaks, valleys, dense and extensive forests, caves and other types of shelters.
Precisely to eradicate this scourge, the Spanish army took drastic and even brutal measures that led to the destruction of villages and homes and the removal from their own native places of entire families. Finally, Rocca Santa Maria was established in the municipality in 1813.
Undoubtedly the king of the table of the entire mountain territory of Teramo is the porcino of Monti della Laga, celebrated annually in Rocca Santa Maria with the Porcino Mushroom Festival, in August.
The lush, extensive and rich forests of the area, in fact, are a unique natural habitat for many species of mushrooms. For example, a possible very good and prepared recipe in this area is that of roasted mushrooms.
First of all it is necessary to choose porcini of big dimensions (500 g for 6 people), to clean them and to separate the stems. Cut the chapels deep into their central part, sprinkle them with a little salt, pepper and shredded garlic and season with oil. Cook on the grill at moderate heat.
One of the symbolic places of Rocca Santa Maria is without doubt the Ceppo. Located at 1300 m s.l.m. is known throughout the Teramo area for the goodness and abundance of mushrooms that are found in the vast woods, for the opportunity to take long walks or go along enchanting trekking routes and also for the history page linked to the partisan struggle, since , Bosco Martese, in September 1943, was the scene of the first battle in Italy between partisan and German formations supported by some local fascists. In summer you can walk the many paths that branch off to neighboring countries either on foot, on horseback or mountain-bike. Among these perhaps the most evocative excursion is the one that leads to the Morricana waterfall, at almost 1600 m s.l.m. immersed in the predominantly beech woods.
