It is a small village located 750 meters s.l.m. and inhabited by just under 300 people, set in the mountain frame of Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga. It offers a remarkable view on enchanting peaks like the Corno Grande, the Corno Piccolo, the Pizzo Intermesoli, the Monte Corvo and the Monte Gorzano.
Of medieval structure, the village of Fano, nestled between the green and the rocks of the mountain, is an ideal destination for nature lovers, which offers a wide variety of short and medium-course itineraries, from the "Selva" and "Merletti2 , real embroideries of rock, up to the "Grotte delle Fate", mysterious poppies of prehistoric origin.
In the winter tourist center of Prato Selva, the slopes lead to the Colle dell'Abetone (1800 mt), at the top of which stands the Chiesetta dell'Alpino. Among the places to visit also the Fonte della Cannalecchia, which since ancient times offers very fresh water with recognized therapeutic properties.
The historic center, very impressive, is gathered around the Church of SS. Peter and Paul dating back to the sixteenth century and perhaps it is the remake of another building built in 1335 on the ruins of an ancient pagan temple.
Over the years, the town has incorporated Villa Moreni, a tiny conglomerate initially divided by Fano Adriano and provided with its own seventeenth-century church consecrated to the cult of San Rocco.
Founded during the Roman period, almost certainly around 100 BC, it derives its toponym from Fanum Adriani, a temple erected by emperor Hadrian on the hill of San Marcello where the Hermitage of the Annunciation stands today.
According to other studies, however, the name would come from the god of war and fire (Hatrianus or Hadrianus) to whom the Italic race would have been devoted. During the Republican-Roman period it experienced a good fortune, but then began to decline and become increasingly isolated due to the implosion of the Roman Empire and the barbarian and Saracen invasions.
Moreover, an important factor that led to this slow but inexorable decline was the disappearance and almost complete cancellation of the Via Cecilia, a fundamental link between these areas and Rome, of which few traces remain along the former state road n.80. If this extreme periphery protected the area from further invasion, on the other hand it left the country in a state of backwardness that lasted until the twentieth century.
Traditional festivals
In Fano Adriano there are two traditions that over time have established themselves and then become real attractions for the entire territory of Teramo and beyond. On November 11th San Martino is celebrated, which here takes on the characteristics of a popular festival where the sacred mixes with the layman and local culinary specialties.
The festival takes place in Piazza Prato and is characterized by the tasting of sausages, callara sheep and chestnuts, all accompanied by an exquisite freshly produced new wine.
On December 26th, instead, in the village of Cerqueto, the Living Nativity is held, a fixed appointment since it was organized for the first time, ie in 1965 and for years now known as the Living Nativity of the Gran Sasso Park - Monti della Laga.
The beauty of the event is also linked to the enchanting setting offered by the village, itself resembling a crib of houses close to the highest Apennine mountains.
