The church currently has a modern appearance, however it has an ancient history as it was built in the 16th century. It has a horizontal crowning façade and on its left side stands a bell gable that supports two bells.
The modest stone portal is surmounted by a small aedicule above which is barely visible a fresco of the Madonna and a round oculus surrounded by a brick which houses a terracotta bust of St. Maximus to whom the church is dedicated.
The interior has a single hall with two small side chapels on the altar. The apse area is beneath a beautiful dome, while the face of the altar is embellished with a mosaic of fifteen castelli ceramic tiles that reproduce the scene of the Last Supper.
In addition, the church preserves the statue of the Madonna di Pagliara, carried in procession by the faithful of the place on the Sunday after Easter.
